United Airlines Extends Flight Credits Expiration Through End of 2022
United Airlines passengers now have more time to use travel credits. The airline is extending both future flight credits and electronic travel certificates.
United Airlines offers two types of credits which are different from each other on the way they are used and timeframe to use them. You’ll receive future flight credit if you cancel a flight or change to a less expensive flight. You may receive an electronic travel certificate as compensation for volunteering your seat or as a gesture of goodwill. Previously, you may have also received one when you canceled a flight.
Future flight credits may only be used by the customer who originally booked a trip that was later canceled or who transferred their ticket to a cheaper flight and received the fare difference as a credit. Future flight credits are typically valid for one year, but they have now been extended through Dec. 31, 2022. The extension applies to all airline tickets purchased between May 1, 2019 and Dec. 31, 2021.
Electronic travel certificates, on the other hand, can be transferred to other passengers. They are valid for up to two years (24 months) after the date they were issued. Electronic travel certificates set to expire between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year will also be valid until the end of 2022, a United spokesperson told Travel + Leisure.
